BREVARD, N.C. - Piedmont men's tennis bounced back with a convincing 7-0 road sweep of Brevard on Friday afternoon in North Carolina.
The Lions started the match strong with three statement wins in doubles, taking a 1-0 lead into singles, where they won all six matches in straight sets to earn their second road win of the young season.
It was the No. 1 doubles team of
Leyton Dunn and
Charles Parnell that clinched first, winning 6-2 before
Rohan Kavali and
Amir Latipov clinched the point with a 6-1 win at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles team of
Caleb McElveen and
Mark Backeberg also delivered a 6-2 win at No. 2.
Singles action was all in favor of Piedmont, with dominant wins across the board. Dunn delivered a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 to get things started, while Kavali (6-0, 6-1) dropped just one game at No. 4 to put the Lions on the brink of the clinch.
That race was won by Backeberg, who prevailed 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, just ahead of Parnell, who won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1.
Brent Sherman (6-0, 6-2) and Latipov (6-1, 6-0) combined to lose just three total games in clinical performances at No. 5 and No. 6.
Up next, the Lions will be back in action next with an exhibition home match next Tuesday, March 3 vs. Division II North Greenville at 3 p.m. The team's next counting match will be on Monday, March 8 in Orlando, Florida on Spring Break.
