NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Washington and Lee 19, Piedmont 18
Records: Piedmont, 3-3; Washington and Lee 2-3
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Piedmont baseball team fell in an offensive slugfest to the Generals of Washington and Lee by a final of 19-18.
The Lions would put together a rally in the back half of the game but ultimately ran out of outs as the Generals escaped with the win.
It was a day to forget for the Lions' pitching staff, as the Generals read them immediately, scoring seven in the early innings.
The Lions' offense would look to claw their way back into the game by answering the third and fourth, but the Generals' offense was relentless.
In the fifth inning, down by 10, the Lions would find their trademark big inning. The top of the lineup set the tone for the inning, with Cody Funk leading the way with a leadoff single. From there it was a hit parade for the Lions. Cruz Mullinix singled to get the rally started. Davin Miller and Justin Shaffer brought home runs for the Lions in the inning as the sophomore duo continued their offensive pace from their previous game.
The Piedmont rally brought them closer to Washington and Lee and made the ballgame interesting once again.
Both lineups would dig deeper into the others' pitching over the course of the next innings, and after a four-run inning by the Generals in the eighth, it looked like the Lions would be unable to stage another rally, but Milkjug Magic appeared to have traveled with the team to North Carolina.
The bottom of the ninth inning would be led off by a Piedmont strikeout, and then the Lions came alive once again. For the second time in as many days, Justin Shaffer stood in with the bases loaded, and once again the sophomore came through. Shaffer ripped a single through the infield, bringing home Mullinix. The Lions would chip away at the Generals' lead until Davin Miller came to the plate with the score 19-16. Miller, a big hero yesterday, had another chance to deliver. Down two strikes, the sophomore launched a ball to the right center field track, bringing home a pair of runners and putting himself in scoring position in a one-run game. The Lions would bring the winning run to the plate, but the magic would run out for them as the Generals picked up the final out of the game, stranding the tying run in scoring position and turning away the Lions.
Piedmont's pitching looks to be going through early-season growing pains, but the lineup has shown that no deficit is too big for them to rally back from.
The Lions will next be in action on Tuesday, February 24th, at 6:00 p.m. against Oglethorpe in Atlanta.
