DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont women's basketball used a big second half to pull away from Maryville and deliver a 94-71 Senior Day win inside Cave Arena.
Hayley Borino was the offensive star on her Senior Day, catching fire from long range on her way to a career-high 20 points and six made three-pointers. Fellow senior
Riley Bryan also had a big offensive day, scoring 15 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Two Lions brought big production off the bench, with senior
Gracie Deetz adding a double-double, with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes while senior
Ava Hunter added 13 points and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but Piedmont's
Lily Conkell knocked down a three-pointer in the final seconds of the period to give the Lions a 22-19 edge going into the second quarter.
Neither side was able to gain separation in the second quarter, but the Lions closed the half on a 6-1 run to lead 40-36 at the break.
Piedmont's offense was unstoppable in an incredible 54-point second half. The Scots were unable to keep up as the Lions gradually lengthened their lead, eventually pushing it to double digits and even 20 in the second half.
The Lions won going away, as their largest lead was the final margin at 94-71.
The win pushes Piedmont to the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament, welcoming Maryville back to Cave Arena for a Tuesday night opening round showdown.
TURNING POINT:
- Piedmont scored 54 points in an offensive explosion in the second half to run away from the Scots.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Borino approached a triple-double in a standout display, scoring a career-high 20 points on six three-pointers as well as adding eight rebounds and seven assists in the win.
- Deetz tallied her fourth double-double of the season, coming off the bench with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
- Bryan added 15 points and eight rebounds.
- Hunter scored 13 points in 19 minutes off the bench.
- The freshmen
Kylie Watkins (13 pts, 8 reb) and
Lily Conkell (7 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast) produced solid all-around performances.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
