Lions Unable to Stave Off Washington & Lee in Kannapolis Opener Loss 7-5

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Piedmont baseball team fell to the Washington and Lee Generals in the D3Baseball Showcase on Friday afternoon by a final score of 7-5.

It was a hard-fought game between the two opponents, but the Generals' late offense proved to be the difference maker as the Lions couldn't hold them off.

Both starting pitchers performed well in the contest, with Piedmont's Andrew Misirly standing out. The sophomore went six strong innings for the Lions, allowing just one run and striking out seven along the way. 

The Lions would continue their opportunistic scoring approach as they brought home their first runs of the game on an RBI single from Cody Funk and an infield error by the Generals. The Piedmont offense would continue to add on, scoring in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Cruz Mullinix was a constant contributor as he collected three hits and scored a run in the ballgame. Cody Funk racked up a pair of RBIs as Piedmont's offense continued their hot start to the season.

Piedmont's pitching would be the difference in the ballgame, as although Miserly went a strong six, the backend of the bullpen allowed Washington and Lee to chip away. The Lions would enter the ninth inning up one run and looked to close the book on the Generals, but Washington & Lee exploded for three in the top of the ninth and took the lead away.

Piedmont would rally in the bottom half but couldn't find the big hit.

It was a tough loss for the Lions in the opening game of the showcase, but they continue to impress with their bats, while their pitching shows flashes.

Piedmont will next be in action on Saturday, February. 21st at 12:00 p.m. against Susquehanna to continue the D3Baseball Showcase in Kannapolis, N.C.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES: 
- Andrew Misirly went six strong innings for the Lions while allowing just on run and sitting down seven on strikeouts.
- Cody Funk brought home a pair of RBI in the contest for Piedmont.
- Cruz Mullinix continues his hot start as he added three hits on the day.
