Demorest, Georgia - Piedmont University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Jamie Purdy has announced the hiring of the next leader of the Piedmont men's golf program tabbing Marcus Reynolds as Head Men's Golf Coach.
"Marcus came highly recommended for the position and stood out as a candidate for the job during a nation wide search that we conducted to find the right fit for this program," said Coach Purdy of the recent hire. "His knowledge of the game combined with his desire to see his golfers develop both on and off the course were key aspects that excited us about the chance to have him lead our golf program."
Reynolds spent the year prior to his hire at Piedmont as the Graduate Assistant for the Point University men's golf team helping the Skyhawks to an appearance in the NAIA National Championship Tournament and a runner-up showing in the SSAC Men's Golf Championship.
Reynolds had this to say regarding his new post: "Thank you to Coach
Jamie Purdy and the entire athletic department staff at Piedmont University for trusting me to lead the men's golf program as its next head coach. The recent success of the men's program, the support throughout the athletic department, and the resources the university provides gives me confidence that we can continue to compete at a high level. I'm excited for the opportunity to build on the program's success and help take Piedmont men's golf to the next level."
Bringing a bevy of experience from his own playing days, Reynolds was an All-American during his final year playing at the College of Coastal Georgia.
Navigating the links as a collegiate athlete from 2020 to 2024, Reynolds also earned All-Conference honors, GCAA All-Region distinction, and was nominated as the CCGA Male Student-Athlete of the Year during that senior season as well.
Reynolds is a well-known name amongst the Georgia golf circuit having spent his junior golf days in the Peach State himself twice being named the Georgia Jr. PGA Player of the Year and playing in the Cutright-Ploeger Cup three times winning the event twice.
Having earned his accolades in the classroom with a NAIA Scholar-Athlete nod and three selections to the Academic All-Conference listing in the Sun Conference as well, Reynolds has been mentored by some of the games' greats in the south, three of which he referenced in his hire.
"I'd like to thank three people who have mentored and coached me into the person and coach that I am today," said Reynolds. "First, Ray Cutright, PGA Master Professional out of Brunswick Country Club. Ray has been my swing instructor, mentor, and most importantly, someone who I consider family.
"Second, Mike Cook, PGA Member and current head men's golf coach at the College of Coastal Georgia. Coach Cook gave me the opportunity to grow both as a player and as a person during my time at Coastal Georgia. Lastly, Maddux Lytle, former head men's golf coach at Point University and current head coach at the University of the South. Coach Lytle gave me my first opportunity to begin my coaching career by hiring me as a graduate assistant. He helped me develop as a coach and gave me the foundation to take this next step."
Reynolds acknowledged just how impactful his mentors have been in this process of preparing him to be the Piedmont University Head Men's Golf Coach but also knew that the list is tough to boil down to three, saying "There are many other people who have supported and influenced me along the way, but without these three men, I would not be where I am today. I am extremely grateful for the impact each of them has had on my life."
Reynolds will begin his tenure with the Lions immediately.
