CCS Win Streak Lives On as Women's Tennis Outlasts Asbury 4-3

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 4, Asbury 3
Records: Piedmont, 16-2 (5-0 CCS); Asbury, 9-4 (4-1 CCS)

DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont women's tennis is now alone in the top spot in the CCS standings after a hard-fought 4-3 win over Asbury on a warm Saturday afternoon in Demorest.

With the win, the Lions have now won 47 regular season conference matches in a row, between the CCS and the USA South.

The streak looked like it may be in jeopardy after a split at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with the team of Bri Laidman and Dannie Evans prevailing 6-2 at No. 2 before the Eagles answered with a win at No. 1.

That set the stage for senior Alyssa McSpadden and freshman Sarah Sanabia at No. 3 doubles, but the duo was up to the task, outlasting their opponents in a grueling 7-5 win to give Piedmont the all important doubles point.

With just No. 1 through No. 3 singles going on court first, Asbury was able to regain traction, with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. However, freshman Caroline Morrison stepped up at No. 3 to win 7-5, 6-3 and even the score at 2-2.

Then, it was up to the No. 4 through No. 6 matches, with each side needing to take 2-of-3 to clinch the win. Lauryn Leslie cruised through her match at No. 4, winning 6-0, 6-2 to put Piedmont one win away.

With Jordan Ballard battling in a second set after dropping the first, it was up to the fifth-year senior Evans to close the door on the Eagles, and she delivered, winning 6-2, 6-1 in clinical fashion to push the Lions over the top.

Piedmont still has two conference road matches remaining, beginning next Tuesday, April 8 at Agnes Scott.

TURNING POINT:
- Sanabia and McSpadden prevailed late with a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Seniors McSpadden, Laidman, Evans and Leslie all came up clutch with each earning at least a part of one point in the match.

NEWS AND NOTES:
- Piedmont has now won 47 consecutive conference matches in the regular season and has never lost within the CCS.
