LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Piedmont University baseball team rolled to a 17-9 win at Covenant Thursday in the series opener. The offense was rolling on Thursday with 22 total hits including eight extra base hits.

The Lions were off and running in the contest as they scored five runs in the first inning. Back-to-back singles to start the game by Cody Funk and Ben Connelly set the table for Trace Cate who had a 2-RBI triple.

Kyle Carlson hit his first of two home runs in the game with a two run shot in the first inning making it 5-0.

Piedmont totaled five runs on five hits and went right back to work in the second adding three more. By the mid-point in the third inning, the Lions had racked up 11 runs on 12 hits.

Zeke Swartz saw an early exit despite a solid performance after the third batter of the third inning. Adam Metivier entered and Covenant took advantage of the forced change for the Lions.

Covenant added three in the third to trail 11-3, but went back to work in the fifth inning with a five spot to make it a contest again trailing 11-8.

The Piedmont offense was not done for the day however as they added one in the sixth before another five spot in the seventh as Carlson had a three-run home run to cap the inning making it 17-8.

The Scots put up one in answer in the eighth but were unable to rally with Lucas Tritt closing out the final 1.2 innings of the game allowing just one hit.
