LaGRANGE, Ga. - Piedmont softball used a late rally to avoid a doubleheader sweep at LaGrange on Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers jumped on the Lions late in game one and early in game two. However, the Lions fought back late in the second game, rallying to win 4-3 and close out the weekend strong.
Game 1: LaGrange 12, Piedmont 4 (F/6)
In what turned out to be a trend for the day, the team that got the scoring started was not able to capitalize on the momentum.
The Lions struck for three runs over the first two innings, with two of the runs driven in by a pair of
Maddi Spieks RBI doubles.
Unfortunately, the 3-0 Piedmont lead did not hold up, as LaGrange pounced with an eight-run bottom of the fourth to flip the script, before adding three more in the bottom of the sixth to win by run rule.
Spieks was the offensive highlight for Piedmont, going 3-for-4 with three RBI in the loss.
Game 2: Piedmont 4, LaGrange 3
Looking to avoid a five-game losing streak, things looked dire for the Lions in the early going, with LaGrange striking for three runs on a bases-clearing double in the first.
The Lions were scoreless until the fourth, when
Jasmine Lowery delivered an RBI single to right field and put Piedmont on the board.
Back within striking distance, the Lions were able to turn the game around with a three-run top of the sixth inning.
Spieks started the rally with a leadoff single before
Mandi Peretti added a bunt single to put the tying run on base. Then, with the bases loaded,
Megan Steinmeyer brought the Lions within a run on an RBI single. With the bases still loaded
Lea Smith reached on a fielder's choice to tie things up. After the Lions saw the potential go-ahead run thrown out at home plate,
Kennedy Votava delivered the eventual game-winning hit, an infield single with two outs to give Piedmont its first lead of the day.
Piedmont starting pitcher
Taylor Spivey settled in nicely after the tough start, finishing off the complete game, allowing just three hits total as she shut the door on the Panthers for the final six outs.
Up next, the Lions will return home and host Emory this Wednesday, April 16 at 1 and 3 p.m.

- Piedmont's three-run sixth inning helped it salvage a split with a game two victory.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
