DEMOREST, Ga. - In the series finale for Piedmont baseball against LaGrange, the Panthers prevailed as Piedmont fell behind early and despite a late rally suffered a 5-3 loss Sunday.
Piedmont's
Peyton Irvin earned the start for the Lions and while it was a quick first inning, the Panthers managed to score one on a pair of hits off just eight pitches. LaGrange got back on the board in the third inning with a Curt Bonner double to drive in one, but a play at the plate provided the final out of the inning and ended the threat.
The Lions did not manage anything offensively until the third inning when
Cody Funk singled but despite a walk in the frame as well, both runners were left stranded.
LaGrange's designated hitter Tray Owens left no doubt with a home run to left in the fourth inning to increase the Panthers' lead to 4-0.
It was not until the seventh inning that Piedmont saw life as
Cole Ellis singled and was brought in on a
Tyler Nelson double. A fantastic leaping snag at third was the final out of the frame as
Davin Miller had laced a shot toward the left side but the threat was ended.
LaGrange bounced back to tack on another run in the eighth extending the lead to 5-1 but Piedmont was not done offensively.
A
Ben Connelly double with one out in the eighth forced a pitching change for LaGrange as starter Trystin Merson went 7.1 innings to earn the win.
Trace Cate had a home run robbed in right center for the second out of the inning, but a
Cruz Mullinix RBI single made it 5-2.
In the ninth,
Kyle Carlson blasted a leadoff home run off the scoreboard in left field but that was the lone run the Lions managed.
Up next, the Lions will step outside of conference play for a trip to Oglethorpe Tuesday.
TURNING POINT:
-A home run by Tray Owens in the fourth inning made it 4-0 LaGrange and kept Piedmont at bay.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
-
Tyler Nelson was 2-for-4 with an RBI as he had an RBI double in the seventh inning for Piedmont's first run of the game.
