Softball Drops Two at No. 9 Huntingdon

NEED TO KNOW:
Game 1 Score: No. 9 Huntingdon 5, Piedmont 1
Game 2 Score: No. 9 Huntingdon 7, Piedmont 2
Records: Piedmont, 21-13 (9-3 CCS); Huntingdon, 28-3 (11-1 CCS)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Piedmont softball was unable to contain No. 9 Huntingdon, falling in both games of a CCS doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.

Game 1: No. 9 Huntingdon 5, Piedmont 1

The Lions were able to hold the Hawks off the scoreboard in the first two frames but surrendered a pair of runs on a two RBI single in the third.

From there, Huntingdon standout pitcher Allie Roberts made it stand up, surrendering just one run in a complete game performance.

The Hawks tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as insurance while Piedmont was able to avoid the shutout, scoring on a Kennedy Votava RBI single in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, Roberts was able to escape with minimal damage and close out the game.

Game 2: No. 9 Huntingdon 7, Piedmont 2

Game two followed much of the same script as the first one, with the Hawks breaking a scoreless tie in the third inning. This time, the Hawks struck for four runs on four hits as the Lions were forced to go to their bullpen. Summer McCranie entered in the circle and stranded a runner on base to prevent further damage.

Piedmont was able to take advantage of a leadoff single from Maddi Spieks and an error to score its first run to stay close.

Unfortunately, the Hawks were able to get the run right back in the fourth inning.

Piedmont did cut its deficit to 5-2 with a single run in the sixth but that was as close as the contest ever was, as Huntingdon tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and held the Lions off the board in the seventh to earn the sweep.

Up next, the Lions will be in action in a CCS road doubleheader again tomorrow, taking on LaGrange at 12 and 2 p.m.
