FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  - In the series opener for the Piedmont University baseball team at Methodist, it was the Monarchs who prevailed in a 5-1 contest. 

Zeke Swartz took the loss for the Lions tossing 6.0 innings allowing just one earned run. The Monarchs took the lead in the fourth off two hits and an error. 

Piedmont's lone run came in the sixth inning after a Jack Ryan sac fly scored Cody Funk. Unfortunately, later that inning, Piedmont allowed as many hits as they had errors as Methodist reclaimed the lead with two runs off two hits and two errors in the home half of the sixth. 

The Monarchs added runs in the seventh and eighth innings as well for the final of 5-1. 

Up next, the Lions will look to even the series on Saturday in game two of the weekend. 

TURNING POINT:
- The Monarchs used a pair of runs in the sixth to take the lead for good after Piedmont tied it in the top of the inning. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Cody Funk had two of Piedmont's five hits in the contest going 2-for-4 on the day.
