DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont softball returned home and bounced back with a dominant doubleheader sweep of Buena Vista on Wednesday afternoon in Demorest.
The Lions delivered a pair of run rule victories with seven run innings in both games to take control and run away with both.
Â
Game 1: Piedmont 9, Buena Vista 1 (F/5)
After Piedmont surrendered a single run in the top of the first to the Beavers, it was all Lions after that, as they scored a combined 19 unanswered runs over the next two contests.
The Lions did not trail for long, as a sacrifice fly from
Rylie Erickson knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.
However, the decisive inning came in the third, with the Lions scoring seven runs on six hits and taking advantage of two Buena Vista errors to take control.
RBI singles by Erickson, reigning CCS Rookie of the Week
Mandi Peretti and
Hannah Cintron highlighted the inning.
That was more than enough offense in support of starting pitcher
Megan Steinmeyer, who threw a five inning complete game, allowing just one hit, zero earned runs with a walk and a season-high seven strikeouts.
Steinmeyer was also a standout offensively, with a 2-for-3 game. Erickson led the team with three RBI.
Game 2: Piedmont 10, Buena Vista 0 (F/5)
Game two saw the second inning be the decisive seven run frame for Piedmont, as Buena Vista was unable to crack the scoreboard against
Taylor Spivey in another five-inning rout.
The Lions scored those seven runs in the second courtesy of seven base hits and one Buena Vista error. The seven-run inning was highlighted by a Steinmeyer two RBI double, the only extra base hit of the decisive frame.
With the game already well in hand, the Lions added three more runs in the fourth inning to set up the run rule victory.
Kasey White's RBI single was one of four hits in the frame as the Lions then shut the door in the top of the fifth as Spivey completed the five inning shutout.
Overall, Spivey tossed 5.0 innings, allowing just three hits and zero earned runs with no walks and a season-high five strikeouts.
Up next, the Lions will head to the Diamond Classic in Raleigh, N.C. for weekend tournament action.Â
TURNING POINT:
- A seven run third inning in game one and a seven inning second inning game two was enough to power the Lions to run rule wins.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- The Piedmont pitching staff was outstanding in both games with Steinmeyer and Spivey each tossing five inning complete games and both delivering season highs in strikeouts as Steinmeyer fanned seven and Spivey five.
-
Hannah Cintron had three hits on the day with two in game one and another in game two.
