RALEIGH, N.C. - Piedmont softball split a pair of contests on the road at the Diamond Classic on Friday with a win over Muskingum and a loss to #4 Rowan.
Game 1: #4 Rowan 8, Piedmont 0 F/6
Piedmont was in a battle with #4 Rowan with a scoreless game through the first four innings of play.
Megan Steinmeyer pitched the first 4.1 innings of the game before Rowan managed three runs in the bottom of the fifth and forced a pitching change. The Lions used a total of four pitchers in the contest as Rowan broke open the contest with five runs in the sixth inning to claim a run-rule win in six innings 8-0.
Piedmont had just one hit in the contest that came on the opening batter of the game.
Mandi Peretti had the lone hit of the game for Piedmont while there were a total of three walks issued to the Lions in the game.
Game 2: Piedmont 5, Muskingum 4
Game two saw Piedmont score quickly with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Lions did not have a hit in the frame but four walks and a wild pitch drove in two runs to put the Lions ahead.
Muskingum scored once in the fourth and two in the fifth to pull ahead 3-2, but Piedmont answered in the bottom of the frame to tie it up at 3-3.
The scoring continued as Muskingum reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth with a run, but Piedmont was able to use timely hitting and stolen bases to add two runs and take the lead for good in the 5-4 win.
Megan Steinmeyer took both decisions for the day with the loss in game one and the win in game two.
Up next, the Lions will face Lynchburg and William Peace on Saturday.
