CENTRAL, S.C. - Piedmont freshman thrower
Jayden Smith's win in the shot put highlighted Piedmont track and field at the SWU Gotta Run Invite in Central, South Carolina as the event concluded late Saturday afternoon. Smith's winning throw came in his sixth and final attempt.
Competing almost exclusively in field events, the Lions totaled 18 top-10 finishes.
In addition to Smith's outstanding performance in the shot put, fellow thrower
Matthew Blocksom reached third in the Piedmont record book in the men's hammer throw, with a PR of 41.90m, good for ninth in the event.
He was not the only Lion in the top 10, with
George Ketch producing a sixth-place finish with a throw of 46.91m, which is a PR for him in that event and falls just short of the 46.92m school record.
The women's throwers also produced strong finishes, led by a fourth-place from
Allie Feltus in the discus. Her toss of 38.59m led all Piedmont athletes and falls just shy of her own school record in the event.
Shealee Gallegos was right behind Feltus, finishing sixth with a toss of 35.27m.
Feltus was also in the top five in the javelin, with a throw of 28.19m. Right behind her was senior
Ileyna Brooks, who made her spring debut finishing seventh in the event with a throw of 26.29m.
The Lions delivered 10 PR's, with most coming on Friday.
Piedmont had three events in which three athletes finished in the top 10, the women's hammer, women's javelin and men's shot put.
Up next, the Lions will head back to South Carolina, but this time to Anderson for the Electric City Invitational, beginning next Friday, April 4 and running through Saturday, April 5.
