Women's Tennis Delivers Senior Day Sweep Against Maryville

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 7, Maryville 0
Records: Piedmont, 13-1 (3-0 CCS); Maryville, 5-3 (1-1 CCS)

DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont women's tennis left no doubt in a 7-0 Senior Day sweep on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Demorest.

Prior to the match, the Lions honored seniors Lizzie Ivey, Bri Laidman, Lauryn Leslie, Alyssa McSpadden, Hollan Rabensdorf and Dannie Evans for their contributions to the program.

Piedmont was able to roll through doubles and then won five of the six singles lines in straight sets to move to 3-0 in conference play and 13-1 overall.

The senior McSpadden improved to 2-0 on the season with freshman Sarah Sanabia as the duo rolled to a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles.

Then, it was a race between the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams to see who would clinch the doubles point. That race was won by the No. 1 team of Sarah Row and Jordan Ballard, as they prevailed 6-2 just before the seniors Laidman and Evans closed out their match at No. 2, 6-3.

With the men's match against Maryville taking place simultaneously, just No. 1 through No. 3 singles took the courts first. Laidman was the first to clinch, winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.

McSpadden's turn was next, as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 to put the Lions a win away from clinching the match.

Fresh off winning CCS Rookie of the Week, Caroline Morrison stumbled in the first set, but regained her footing quickly and was dominant in the second and third sets to clinch the match with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 3.

Although the match was in hand, the Lions quickly polished off match wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 with seniors taking in wins in all three. Evans delivered a clinical 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 before Leslie won her match 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4. That left Rabensdorf to close out the festivities, as she cruised 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

Up next, the Lions will take to the road for three matches next week, starting with a non-conference battle at Oglethorpe this Wednesday, March 26 at 4 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- After dropping the first set at No. 3, Morrison flipped the script in the second and third sets to complete the clinch before all matches were even on court.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Seniors McSpadden, Laidman and Evans all picked up singles and doubles wins for the Lions.

NEWS AND NOTES:
- Piedmont has now gone 12 CCS matches in a row without dropping a single line.
