Softball Plays Final Day at NFCA Leadoff Classic

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Redlands 17, Piedmont 2
Records: LeTourneau 6, Piedmont 2

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Piedmont University softball team wrapped up competition at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgia on Sunday with a pair of losses first falling 17-2 to #22 Redlands before LeTourneau knocked off the Lions 6-2 in the second game of the day.

Against Redlands to start the day, Piedmont took the lead in the 1st inning when Lea Smith tallied a RBI single to score Mandi Peretti

However the lead was short-lived as Redlands took advantage of a Piedmont error in the home half of the inning to go up 2-1.  From there, Redlands added 5 runs in the 2nd and another pair in the 3rd to jump out to a big lead.

The Lions would get a bright spot though in their half of the 3rd inning with Madison Hawkins homering over the wall in centerfield for her first collegiate home run.

Despite the highlight from the youngster, Redlands added eight runs on in the 4th inning for the 17-2 victory over Piedmont early on in the day.

In its second game of the day, Piedmont took a 2-0 lead after the first two innings with Jasmine Lowery scoring on an error in the 1st inning before Heartly Nepveux doubled to lead off the 2nd and scored later in the inning.

However, LeTourneau cut the margin in half with a solo homer in the 3rd inning and took the lead with a two-run shot in the bottom of the 4th.

The contest remained a one-run ballgame until the home half of the 6th when LeTourneau added three runs on four hits to tack on some insurance for the eventual 6-2 victory.
