ORLANDO, Fla. - Piedmont men's tennis navigated a rainy day in Orlando and was able to come away with a quick 7-0 sweep of King's College (Pa.) on Monday afternoon.
In an attempt to escape the rain showers, the Lions and Monarchs contested singles first, playing an eight game pro set.
The change in format was not a problem for Piedmont, which quickly raced out to a big lead and clinched the match at 4-0. Overall, Piedmont lost just one game at No. 2 through No. 6 singles and were not threatened in any of the matches.
Freshman
Horacio Rodriguez finished first with an 8-0 win at No. 2 before
Leyton Dunn and
JC Foster also added 8-0 shutouts to make it 3-0.
Simon Johnstone was able to win the race to the clinch, as he put the finishing touches on an 8-0 victory at No. 3 to give Piedmont its seventh dual win of the season.
Playing in his first singles match of the spring,
Brent Sherman delivered an 8-1 win at No. 5 before
Mark Backeberg finished off singles action with an 8-4 victory at No. 1.
With the match in hand and a 6-0 lead, the Lions added the doubles point as well to put an exclamation mark on the day.
The freshman duo of
Artiom Anzhilov and Rodriguez won 6-0 at No. 3 before Sherman and Johnstone clinched the final point of the match with a 6-2 win at No. 2.
For good measure, Foster and Dunn made it a perfect day for Piedmont with a 6-2 win of their own at No. 1 doubles.
Up next, the Lions will play twice on Tuesday, with an 11:30 a.m. match against Wheaton and a 6 p.m. match against Millsaps from the SAA.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Sherman and Foster each added their first dual singles wins of the season while Foster moved to 2-0 in doubles.
- Johnstone earned the clinch with an 8-0 win in singles and also teamed with Sherman for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles that ensured the 7-0 sweep.
