Softball Upset of Pac Lu Comes Up Just Short as Lions Fall Twice on Day 2 of NFCA

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Piedmont University softball team continued play at the NFCA Classic on Saturday with Denison knocking off the Lions 13-5 in the first game of the day before Piedmont fell to Pacific Lutheran University 8-6 in their second game of the day.

Denison opened the scoring with a solo homer in the 1st but Piedmont took a 2-1 lead in the home half with Jordyn Green and Kaylee Taylor picking up the RBI's.  

The Lions would not hold the lead long as Denison scored 6 runs over the next two innings including a 3-run homer from Abogado to go in front 7-2.  

Piedmont cut the lead to two runs when Jasmine Lowery and Jordyn Green posted RBI hits in the 5th, but Denison answered with 6 runs in the 6th to knock off the Lions 13-5.  

In their second game, the Lions took on a lethal Pac Lutheran squad that began competition on the weekend by knocking off #18 Pfeiffer 14-2 in a 5-inning contest and carried a 2-1 record into the game with Piedmont.  

The Lions posted a run in the bottom of the first inning before going on to hold PLU scoreless over the first four innings. 

But it was a 5-run 3rd inning that gave Piedmont the jolt needed as the Lions carried a 6-0 lead threatening to shorten their contest with the Lutes just as PLU had in their opener the day before.  

However, Pac Lu answered with six runs of its own in the top of the 5th to tie the game up before scoring a pair of runs in the top of the 7th inning to shoot in front of the Lions 8-6 with only three outs standing in their way of a dubs.  

The Lutes retired the Lions in order in the home half of the 7th to earn the victory over Piedmont moving to 3-1 on the year and weekend while the Lions evened out at 4-4.

UP NEXT:
- The Lions will wrap up competition at the NFCA Classic on Sunday taking on top-25 University of Redlands from California and Texas-based LeTourneau University in a DH set to start at 1:30 pm.
