Softball Faces Wisconsin-Eau Claire to Open NFCA Classic

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Wisconsin-Eau Claire 11, Piedmont 2
Records: Piedmont, 3-2; Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 2-1

COLUMBUS, Ga. -  Piedmont softball began action at the NFCA Classic on Friday earning a split with an 11-2 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a 7-6 win over Chicago.

Against UW-Eau Claire, Piedmont fell behind early after a home run in the top of the first, but the Lions answered with a run of their own in the home half. The Blugolds managed home runs in each of the first three innings of play to create a sizeable lead 9-2 after three complete.

There were a total of three home runs in the contest, all by the Blugolds, including two by Norah Kitnink.

Piedmont scored on an error in the second inning but totaled just six hits against UW-Eau Claire to the Blugolds' 12.

In their second game of the day, Piedmont went back and forth with UAA foe Chicago whose appearance in the NFCA Classic is the Illinois-based school's first action of the 2025 season.

Chicago posted a 1-0 lead scoring in the top of the 3rd before Piedmont overtook the home team in the book with a pair of runs in the 4th.

However the advantage was short lived as Chicago scored two runs of its own in the home half of the 4th to go up 3-2.  The two scored a run each in the 5th as Chicago stayed in front before Piedmont exploded for four runs in the top of the 6th to shoot out in front 7-4.

Chicago would add a pair in the 6th to make it a one-run ball game headed into the decisive 7th and put runners on to threaten a walkoff, but Piedmont held tight in the final frame to hold on for the 7-6 win.
