Women's Lacrosse Falls in OT Battle to Berry 16-15

NEED TO KNOW:

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University women's lacrosse team rallied to force overtime but came up short in a 16-15 loss to Berry Wednesday. Piedmont scored with nine seconds remaining to tie the game at 15 but was unable to capitalize after securing the opening draw control of overtime. 

The Lions did not score on their opportunity and after a foul, Berry was able to capitalize on a free position shot for the game winner. 

It was a tight contest throughout with both teams scoring five in the opening period but Berry led 9-7 at the break. In the third, both teams added three goals leaving Piedmont trailing by two entering the final period. 

The Lions did not back down however and were able to tie the game at 13 on a man-up goal by Clara Welch. After falling behind again, it was once more a man-up opportunity that Piedmont used to tie the game at 14. 

With 2:12 remaining, Berry took the lead 15-14 but the Lions did not give up. Inside the final minute, Piedmont was able to score with nine seconds remaining with Merryn Bumpass adding her fourth goal of the game. 

Bumpass scored four goals in the contest and added a pair of assists to lead Piedmont and recorded her 200th career point in the contest. 

Up next, Piedmont is on the road at Centre on Saturday, March 1. 

TURNING POINT:
- It took overtime to decide but after Piedmont was unable to score off its first possession, it was the Vikings who capitalized on a free position shot for the victory.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Merryn Bumpass recorded her 200th career point in the game as she totaled four goals and two assists. 
- Rachel Verner tallied 13 saves in the contest while Berry had just seven as a team. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Berry had 37 shots in the game to Piedmont's 25 but the Lions did put 22 of those on goal.
