Baseball Rolls in 14-4 Win Over Susquehanna in 7 Innings

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Piedmont University baseball team rolled to a 14-4 victory Saturday over Susquehanna in seven innings. The Lions came out of the gate hot and scored 11 runs in the first three innings to take control of the contest. 

Trace Cate was undoubtedly the player of the game as he was 2-for-4 with seven RBI as he had a 3-run home run in the second inning and a bases-clearing double in the third. 

Piedmont jumped out quickly with a 3-0 lead after the first and continued to pile on in the second. Following the first pitching change of the game just 11 batters in, Trace Cate homered to drive in three runs making it 7-0.

Bodie Eilertson struck out the side in the bottom of the second before the offense went back to work. The Lions scored another four runs in the third with Cate clearing the bases with a double, coming off another River Hawks reliever. 

Susquehanna was able to tack on four in the third inning but all runs were unearned after a pair of errors in the frame. Piedmont added two more runs in the fifth and another in the seventh forcing Susquehanna through four pitchers. 

For the Lions, Eilertson earned the win pitching 5.0 while Andrew Misirly threw the sixth and Riley McCallum took the mound in the seventh. Both faced four batters allowing just one hit and one strikeout. 

Up next, the Lions will take on Swarthmore to complete the D3 Showcase in Kannapolis. 

TURNING POINT:
- The Lions used big innings to start the game to build an 11-0 lead following the top of the third inning. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Bodie Eilertson earned his first win of the year tossing 5.0 complete without allowing an earned run. The senior surrendered five hits while striking out four batters. 
- Trace Cate was 2-for-4 in the contest and had seven RBI with a bases-clearing double and a 3-run home run. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Piedmont begins the year 5-0 for the first time since 2012 when they began the year 7-0.
