ORANGE, Calif. - The Piedmont University baseball team completed the series sweep on Sunday with a 4-2 win over #22 Chapman. The Lions pitching staff continued its spectacular start to the season as
Adam Metivier earned the win going 6.2 innings.
Metivier's only walk of the game came against the first batter he faced and while the Panthers had three hits off him through the first three innings, it was the Lions who were able to strike first.
Piedmont was held hitless through the first three but in the fourth inning
Cody Funk was walked and a
Tyler Nelson double brought him around to score. Nelson was then driven in by
Ben Connelly who traded places with him.
Taking a 2-0 lead into the fifth, the Lions picked up where they left off as
Trace Cate was walked and
Jack Ryan singled to put runners on the corners. An RBI single by
Sean Bailey drove home what proved to be the game-winner making it 3-0 Lions.
Jack Gilsenan doubled in the sixth to drive in Nelson for the final run for the Lions.
Metivier did not allow a hit in the fourth or fifth innings and despite giving up two hits to start the sixth inning, he worked out of a jam with a double play and a fly out.
In the seventh, the Panthers were able to string together three hits to plate two runs and force a pitching change for the Lions as
Averett Thompson entered to shut down the Panthers' attack.
Thompson pitched one complete allowing two hits with one strikeout before
Braden Simms entered to close out the contest. Simms earned his second save of the season going 1.1 innings allowing no hits and striking out two.
