SALEM, Va. - Piedmont men's and women's track & field traveled north to Salem, Virginia with a full squad to take on the Joe LaRocco Invitational on Saturday.
Saturday saw the Lions deliver a number of PR's and a school record fell as well, with numerous top 10 finishes on both sides.
The day was highlighted by freshman
Jayden Smith setting a new school record in the shot put with a toss of 14.24m, which breaks his own mark, which he set at the KMS Invitational to open his career. The toss was good for fourth-place finish in the event.
On the track side,
Silas Goolsby delivered a pair of PR's and a second-place finish in another solid day for the junior.
Goolsby placed second with a 51.29 in the 400m final while he also set a new personal best with a 7.21 in the 60m prelims. His second top-10 finish of the day came in the 200m, where he finished sixth, thanks to an indoor PR performance of 22.66m. However, he was not the only Lion to PR in the 200m as freshman
Bryant Murray did as well with a 24.76.
Walker Capelle also delivered a PR, running the 5k in 15:48.36, good for a sixth place finish in the event.
In the men's weight throw, newcomer
George Ketch finished 10th with a throw of 14.04m while
Ian Grimes threw a PR of 8.71m.
On the women's side, a number of PR performances highlighted the day, led by
Bella Caccamo finishing 10th in the 800m with a PR time of 2:30.18.
Newcomers
Ja'Nia Gray (pole vault) and
Anna Freeman (200m) also PR'd while
Michelle Cates PR'd in the 60m hurdles prelim at 10.22.
Up next, the Lions will have a split squad of competition as the indoor season winds down with one group going to the JDL Last Chance event in Winston-Salem, North Carolina while another group will head back to Sewanee for the Tiger Indoor Invitational next Saturday, Feb. 22.
