DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont men's soccer team was unable to complete a late rally against the Huntingdon Hawks as they fell 3-1 in a physical battle.
The match entered halftime scoreless, with both sides sporting some great defense, but in the second half the Hawks scored three goals within five minutes of each other to seal the game.
The first half was quiet, with several players putting in solid work on the defensive end. Piedmont was able to deliver two chances at the Huntingdon keeper, but he was up to the task, collecting both for saves. Freshman
Josh Duquette earned the start for Piedmont and provided solid protection throughout the half.
Going into halftime, the Lions held the shot advantage, outshooting the Hawks 8-2.
Entering the second half, it looked as though it would be the same story until the Hawks found a break in the Lions' defense on the far side and found a passing window.
The Hawk player would dribble the ball before being taken down by Duquette, but the momentum was too much, and both players slid past the line for the first score of the match in the 61st minute.
Piedmont wouldn't have much time to recover, as the Hawks' attack pressed on, and with Huntingdon in the box once again, Piedmont committed a critical foul, leading to a PK that Huntingdon put to the back of the net, making the score 2-0 in minute 63.
The Hawks never relented, as their next score would come in the 65th minute. Huntingdon found themselves 18 yards out and launched a shot that would lay in for their third and final score of the match.
The Lions tried to recover and maintained a healthy amount of possession for the rest of the match, but great defense by the Hawks kept them at bay.
With just nine minutes left,
Davis Knight was in the box surrounded by red jerseys and fired a shot past the Huntingdon keeper for Piedmont's first goal of the afternoon.
The Lions were able to continue possession until the end, but the Hawks' defense was staunch and stood strong the remainder of the time as Piedmont was unable to complete the comeback. This was a physical match between two teams that showcased strong plays on wings and in the midfield.
Piedmont will finish the regular season at home, welcoming in Johnson & Wales and Belhaven next week.
They will be back in action next on their Senior Day, Tuesday the 25th, against the Wildcats from Johnson & Wales with a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
