MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Piedmont University men's track and field team claimed the 2024 CCS Championships late Wednesday afternoon, repeating as champs after winning the championship in 2023. Piedmont won with 213 total points, while the Mountaineers of Berea placed second with 151 points and both Belhaven and Maryville tied for third with 143.
In total, the Lions had five individual conference champions including Gary Halverson in the men's 1500m, who broke his own school record previously set in 2022. Of the five champions, four hailed from the track events while one was from the thrower events.
Sophomore Silas Goolsby took home the men's 110m hurdles title with a 15.38, narrowly outpacing senior Garrett Stadler who placed second (15.66). The win marks the second year in a row Goolsby has won the event.
Stadler got his title in the men's 400m hurdles, posting a 55.82. His time placed him in front of second place by nearly one and a half seconds.
Freshman Ethan Butler-Paige claimed the only field event title for the Lions, taking home first place in the men's hammer toss with a best distance of 38.85m. His win marks the second year in a row a member of the Piedmont program has claimed the win in the event.
Despite having been out of action recently, junior Tucker Cox claimed first place in the men's steeplechase with a personal best time of 10:26.50.
In total, Piedmont posted 19 podium finishes across the two days of competition.
