MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Piedmont University softball team rallied in extra innings to walk-off No. 5 LaGrange in the opening round of the CCS Tournament. The Lions had a three-run lead going into the seventh but were unable to close it out as the Panthers scored three runs to tie the game 7-7. In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore Madi Cronic played hero, launching a game-winning sacrifice fly to left field as the Lions completed the walk-off win 8-7.

LaGrange jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of an early defensive mistake from the Lions. Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the Piedmont offense came to life. A lead-off error from the Panthers followed by a Hannah Callaway single and a Kennedy Votava walk loaded the bases with no one out in the frame. Kaitlin Isley pushed the first run across with an RBI sacrifice fly and Kara Taylor cleared the bases with a double one batter later. Jasmine Lowery added the final blow with an RBI single, giving Piedmont a 4-1 lead.

The Lions added a pair of runs to strengthen their lead to 6-2 heading into the final frames of the contest. However, trouble began in the top of the sixth. The LaGrange offense posted two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to just two. Piedmont got one run back in the bottom half but the Panthers refused to go quietly. Two hits and three defensive mistakes in the visitors half of the seventh saw LaGrange erase a three-run deficit to tie the game 7-7.

Moving the game into extras, reliever Summer McCraine worked a 1-2-3 inning in the eighth to give her team a chance in the home half. Megan Steinmeyer led off with a double to left field and advanced to third one batter later on a bunt single from Jordyn Green. With two on and no one out, Madi Cronic launched a game-winning RBI sacrifice fly to left, scoring pinch runner Kaylee Wilson from third to give the Lions the 8-7 win.
