MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Piedmont University softball team shocked No. 1 seed Huntingdon early Thursday afternoon, taking down the tournament hosts 3-1. Starter
Megan Steinmeyer tossed a complete game in the circle, giving up just one earned run.
The Lion struck first in the top of the second as
Jasmine Lowery led off the inning with a single and an ensuing error from the Hawks defense allowed
Madi Cronic to record an RBI ground out.
Maddi Spieks picked up right where the offense left off in the top of the third, singling and advancing to second on another defensive mistake from Huntingdon.
Kaitlin Isley followed with a single up the middle before advancing to second, putting runners in scoring position. With two gone in the inning, Lowery singled to left field, scoring Spieks from third. The Lions fortune did not end there as back-to-back walks issued to
Jordyn Green and Steinmeyer pushed across another run and gave Piedmont a 3-0 lead.
Huntingdon threatened a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, leading off with a pair of singles to put runners on the corners. However, Steinmeyer got a big punch out for the first out of the inning then traded an out for a run as the Hawks offense used a sacrifice fly to score their first run. One batter later, Steinmeyer got the pinch hitter to roll over to third for the final out of the inning.
Though the Hawks posted one more hit in the seventh inning, Piedmont slammed the door shut for the 3-1 upset win.
