Win Over Huntingdon Highlights Split Squad Action for Women's Tennis

NEED TO KNOW:
Match 1 Score: No. 14 Sewanee 9, Piedmont 0
Match 2 Score: Piedmont 9, Huntingdon 0
Record: Piedmont, 17-4 (4-0 CCS)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - For the second consecutive day, Piedmont women's tennis earned a split for the second consecutive day on Sunday, blanking a conference opponent while falling to a nationally-ranked foe.

This time, it was one group of Lions rolling to a 9-0 sweep of Huntingdon in Montgomery, Alabama while another group faced the unenviable task of battling No. 14 Sewanee, with the Tigers besting the Lions in shutout fashion.

Match 1: No. 14 Sewanee 9, Piedmont 0

Once again, a group of Lions faced the tall task of a nationally-ranked foe, falling in all three doubles lines and six singles lines in the shutout defeat.

Piedmont was competitive in two of the three doubles matches, with the No. 1 doubles team of Kenzie Imsand and Mia Vasher falling 8-4 and the No. 3 team of Hollan Rabensdorf and Daisha Thompson falling 8-5.

While the Tigers were able to win five-of-six singles matches in straight sets, the Lions battled in a number of them, highlighted by freshman Brooklyn Bolch taking Sewanee's Cici Hardin deep into a third-set match tiebreaker at No. 4. Bolch fell 3-6, 6-4, 0-1 (7), but the freshman nearly was able to put a point on the board for the Lions. Fellow freshman Imsand took her opponent to a first set tiebreaker at No. 3, but fell in the breaker 7-4 before losing the second set 6-0.

Vasher pushed her opponent, Ivy Wilson, to a tough first set at No. 2, but fell 7-5 and then lost the second, 6-0, on the way to defeat.

Match 2: Piedmont 9, Huntingdon 0

The Lions left no doubt from the beginning against an undermanned Hawks squad, rolling to a 9-0 win on the road to move to 4-0 in CCS play.

With Huntingdon having just five available players, the Lions took No. 3 doubles by default before a point was played. Then, in the two contested doubles matches, Piedmont rolled to decisive victories. First, it was Dakota Wilkes and Jordan Ballard with an 8-2 win at No. 2 before Abbey Grace Venham and Bri Laidman cruised to an 8-3 triumph at No. 1.

As the Hawks forfeited No. 6 singles, the Lions needed just one win of the five matches played to clinch the victory. That win came in short order from Wilkes, who won 6-0 6-2 at No. 3. The senior now has 100 career combined victories for Piedmont.

Overall, the Lions lost just four total games across the five singles lines as Venham and Marion Sloyan each won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Alyssa McSpadden closed out a 6-0, 6-1 victory while Laidman concluded the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5.

Up next, the Lions will play two matches in Kentucky next Saturday, battling Berea and Asbury on the road.
