DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont women's tennis delivered a 9-0 win over Covenant to put an exclamation point on a two-match day for the Lions on a sunny Saturday in Demorest.
The Lions opened the afternoon with a 6-0 loss to third-ranked Emory before dispatching the Scots in a rematch of last season's CCS Tournament Final.
Match 1: No. 3 Emory 6, Piedmont 0
The Lions were unable to contain the top-five in the nation Eagles to begin the day, dropping all three doubles lines before losing three singles lines in a match that was played to clinch.
Emory was able to win in straight sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles to take the match.
Match 2: Piedmont 9, Covenant 0
The Lions fared much better in the afternoon, cruising past the Scots in another 9-0 conference shutout.

Piedmont was solid across all three doubles lines, as
Alyssa McSpadden and
Dakota Wilkes clinched first with an 8-3 win at No. 2.

Moments later,
Abbey Grace Venham and
Bri Laidman made it 2-0 Lions with an 8-3 triumph of their own at No. 1. Then, after falling behind early in their match, the duo of
Brooklyn Bolch and
Marion Sloyan overtook their opponents for an 8-5 victory at No. 3 to give Piedmont the doubles sweep.
Heading into singles needing just two points to win the match, the Lions left no doubt, with Wilkes rolling to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 to improve to 12-0 in dual singles matches this season.Â
Venham then took the cilncher, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 to make it 5-0 Piedmont.

With the match in hand, the Lions did not let up, as Sloyan had to battle through a tough second set, but ultimately prevailed, 6-1, 7-5.
With the next three matches on the court, the Lions received straight-set victories from McSpadden (6-3, 6-0) at No. 4, Laidman (6-1, 6-1) at No. 5 and finally
Jordan Ballard (6-1, 6-0) at No. 6 to put the finishing touches on the shutout.
Sitting in first alone now in the CCS conference standings, the Lions will be in action next tomorrow with split squad action. One group wil play at No. 14 Sewanee at 1 p.m. while another will travel to Huntingdon to take on the Hawks in a CCS clash at 2 p.m.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Wilkes moved to a perfect 12-0 in dual singles matches with a dominant win on Saturday over Covenant.
