DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University softball team dropped its Senior Day doubleheader to the Scots of Maryville early Saturday afternoon. Piedmont was held scoreless in Game 1 before a late rally fell short in Game 2.

GAME 1 - Piedmont 0, Maryville 3

Maryville starter Megan Ackerman frustrated the Lions early, holding the offense to just two hits through the first four frames. Meanwhile, the Scots were hot off the jump, scoring the first run of the game in the top of the first. Piedmont starter Megan Steinmeyer did her best to limit the damage as Maryville carried a 1-0 lead into the second.

The Scots struck again in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to score the second run and eventually chased Steinmeyer from the contest in the sixth. Freshman Summer McCranie entered the game to end the inning as Piedmont once again limited the damage to just one and trailed 3-0 going into the bottom half.

With six outs left to work with, the Lions had opportunities in the sixth and seventh to cut into the lead but left a pair of runners stranded in both innings as Ackerman closed out the 3-0 complete game win in the circle.

GAME 2 - Piedmont 4, Maryville 6

Maryville jumped out to a massive lead in the second contest of the day, scoring five runs in the first inning. After chasing the Piedmont starter from the game with just one out in the inning, sophomore Riley Ford entered from the pen to get the Lions out of the inning. However, by the time the inning closed, Piedmont trailed 5-0.

The comeback for the home squad began in the bottom of the third as Maddi Spieks launched a two-out RBI single to get her team on the board. Two more runs followed in the bottom of the fourth with senior Hannah Callaway stealing third and scoring on an errant throw by the catcher and senior Kara Taylor launching an RBI single to center.

Behind 5-3, the Lions cut into the deficit once more with a two-out RBI single from Callaway to make it 5-4. However, the Scots turned the ball back over to Game 1 starter Megan Ackerman, who picked up right where she left off. Piedmont mustered just one more hit in the contest over the next two innings and an insurance run for the Scots gave them a 6-4 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
