LAGRANGE, Ga. - In the series opener at LaGrange, Piedmont won in commanding fashion in an 11-0 contest decided in seven innings. Piedmont starter
Zeke Swartz tossed the complete game for the win allowing just two hits to the Panthers.
Piedmont was quickly on the board after a lead-off walk followed by a hit by pitch.
Trace Cate ripped a single and an additional error on the play allowed both runs to score.
For the first few innings, that was the extent of the action until the Lions were able to strike again in the fifth inning. Back-to-back walks helped Piedmont as there were two on when
Isaak Mullanack stepped up to the plate. Mullanack hit a 2-RBI single to double the score making it 4-0 Lions.
LaGrange managed its first baserunner in the bottom of the fifth after an error and the Panthers were able to record a hit off Swartz, but both runners were stranded.
In the sixth, Piedmont added five runs on four hits and a pair of errors to take a 9-0 lead. In the seventh, the Lions added a pair to make it 11-0 and force LaGrange to put up runs or end the contest early.
Swartz walked two and hit a third to have the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh, but shut down the threat to preserve the shutout and end the contest in seven innings.
Piedmont totaled 10 hits and seven walks in the game while LaGrange posted just two hits and three walks.
Up next, these two teams will face off in a doubleheader on Saturday to conclude the series.
