MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Piedmont men's tennis rolled to another CCS shutout on Sunday afternoon at Maryville and set the program single season wins record in the process.
In the team's 17th victory of the season, the Lions continued their strong doubles play and carried the momentum into singles for the victory.
Playing doubles together for the first time this season, the No. 3 doubles team of
Yannick Wassmer Navarro and
Rohan Kavali dropped just one game in a clinical win to put Piedmont ahead 1-0. Then, for the second day in a row,
Mark Backeberg and
Silas Sandles teamed up at No. 1 doubles to win 8-5.
Finally, it was the No. 2 doubles team of
Bryce VanOrder and
Jackson Traylor that ensured the clean sweep with an 8-5 win of their own.
Piedmont needed just two singles lines to take the match and those were delivered in short order.
Sandles won his match first at No. 3, dropping just one game in a 6-0 6-1 victory. It was fellow senior
Mike Porcelli who delivered the clinch, cruising 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 to give the Lions a 5-0 insurmountable edge.
For the second day in a row, freshman
Charles Parnell was victorious in a conference match at No. 1, outlasting Maryville's James Smith 6-4, 6-1.
With the match in hand, it was up to
Brent Sherman,
Kody Dills and
JC Foster at No. 4 through No. 6 singles to keep Piedmont's clean weekend alive.
The trio delivered, with Sherman clinching a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 while Dills (7-6 (5), 6-3) and Foster (6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (4)) each survived hard-fought battles at No. 5 and No. 6 to outlast their opponents and produce another 9-0 sweep.
