BEREA, Ky. - The Piedmont University softball team raced past the Mountaineers of Berea in both Sunday afternoon contests. Piedmont's offense totaled 38 runs across the two games while recording 47 hits in the doubleheader.
GAME 1 - Piedmont 21, Berea 1 (F/5)
Piedmont jumped on the Mountaineers early, plating six runs in the first frame on four hits.
Heartly Nepveux,
Jasmine Lowery,
Megan Steinmeyer and
Kennedy Votava all recorded hits in the inning as the Lions batted around.
The offense continued clicking, scoring three runs in the second, a pair of runs in the fourth and ten runs in the fifth. By the time the offense was finished, the Lions had posted more runs than outs, scoring 21 total. Recording 22 total hits in the game, 15 different players recorded at least one hit.
In the circle, three different arms for Piedmont combined to surrender just one run on six hits.
GAME 2 - Piedmont 17, Berea 6 (F/6)
The Lions once again jumped out in front in the first frame against Berea. Posting five hits in the inning, Piedmont scored four runs to quickly take a 4-0 lead.
Maddi Spieks,
Kara Taylor and
Natalie Hanson all singled in the frame while
Jasmine Lowery and
Kaitlin Isley launched RBI doubles.
Adding four more runs in the third and a run in the fourth, Piedmont looked ready to pull away once more. However, a rally from the Mountaineers brought the contest back within reach. Surrendering five runs on eight hits, Piedmont was forced to re-enter starter
Taylor Spivey back into the game to escape the inning.
With just a four run lead headed into the fifth, the offense continued to carry the Lions forward. Adding nine runs in the next two innings, Piedmont was able to pull away and secure 17-6 win. The team finished with 25 total hits in the game from 14 different batters.
