Match 1: Piedmont 8, Anderson 1
After a day off from competition, the Lions bounced back in a big way in the opening match on Tuesday, dismantling the Ravens 8-1.
Piedmont began the day strongly, winning all three doubles matches in convincing fashion and losing just three total games across the three lines. First up, it was the duo of freshman
Brooklyn Bolch and senior
Marion Sloyan picking up an 8-1 victory at No. 2 while the No. 3 team of
Bri Laidman and
Mia Vasher finished just behind with a perfect 8-0 win to make it 2-0.
In short order, the doubles sweep was completed as
Alyssa McSpadden and
Dakota Wilkes prevailed 8-2 at No. 1.
Needing just two singles lines to take the match, it was
Abbey Grace Venham who delivered first, reeling in a 6-0, 6-2 dominant win at No. 1. Earlier in the day, the senior was named CCS Player of the Week for her outstanding performance on Sunday.
The clinch came in the form of Vasher, who cruised (6-0, 6-1) at No. 4 to give the Lions the win at 5-0.
From there, Anderson pushed Piedmont to the brink in all of the remaining matches and were able to pull out a line at No. 3. Piedmont showed resolve, though, winning three matches in third-set tiebreakers to make it an 8-1 final.
Freshman
Drea Robinson (6-1, 3-6 ,10-1) was dominant in her third-set breaker to make it 6-1 Piedmont. Then, it was Wilkes' turn to show some fight, battling back from losing a marathon first set to win her third-set breaker 10-8 in a 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (8) victory.
Abby Gayle Moody (3-6, 6-4, 10-3) continued the trend to close out the match, following Robinson's lead by absolutely dominating in her third-set breaker to conclude things on a high note for the Lions.
Match 2: Piedmont 6, Shippensburg 1
In the second match of the day, the Lions also dropped just one singles match on the way to a dominant win.
Playing with doubles counting as just one decision, the Lions won the only two matches they needed to clinch the opening point. After the Raiders won, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles, the Lions needed both No. 1 and No. 2 to get the doubles point. It was the team of
Dannie Evans and
Brook Patton that clinched first, at No. 1 (6-2). That left it up to
Jordan Ballard and
Hollan Rabensdorf at No. 2 doubles, and the duo came through in the clutch, winning 7-5 in a hard-fought match to put the Lions up 1-0.
Singles action saw the Lions pick up three two-set wins at the top to clinch the match. First, it was McSpadden (6-1, 6-0) who cruised at No. 2 while Sloyan stepped into the No. 1 spot and won 6-0, 6-3 to put Piedmont within a point of clinching.
That point came courtesy of the senior Evans, who rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph to ensure a 2-0 day for Piedmont.
In the final three matches, the Lions were in hard-fought battles.
Sarah Row emerged victorious (6-4, 3-6, 10-7) while Patton made it 6-0 as the senior had to win a first-set breaker before cruising in the second set for a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory.
Shippensburg was able to grab a point at the end at No. 6 singles with the outcome long decided.
Up next, the Lions will have Wednesday off from competition before returning to the courts Thursday to conclude their trip with matches against Crown and Loras.
