Lions Drop Doubleheader Against Strong Pfeiffer Pitching

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University softball team dropped both games against the Falcons of Pfeiffer behind strong starting pitching performances from the visitors. Both starters for the Falcons went all seven innings, holding the Lions offense scoreless on the day.

GAME 1 - Piedmont 0, Pfeiffer 4

The Falcons opened the scoring in the first frame, jumping out to an early lead. Pfeiffer struck again in the fourth inning, stringing together back-to-back base knocks with two outs to move the score line to 3-0.

Allowing another run in the sixth, Piedmont trailed 4-0 entering the final innings of play. With one gone in the bottom of the seventh, senior Kara Taylor produced the first hit for the Lions in the contest. Senior Kaitlin Isley followed with a single of her own, putting two on with just one out.

Junior Megan Steinmeyer produced the third hit in a row for the Lions, bringing the tying run to the plate with still only one gone. However, Piedmont would not threaten a comeback any further as the Falcons recorded the final two outs without issue.

GAME 2 - Piedmont 0, Pfeiffer 4 

The second contest of the day remained much closer than the first. Both teams traded hits and stranded runners on the defensive end for four innings before Pfeiffer finally broke the scoreless tie.

In the top of the fifth, three straight walks loaded the bases with no one out to start the inning. A single from the Falcons scored one while a one-out sacrifice fly scored a second. Then, with two gone in the frame, a double cleared the bases and pushed the visitors lead to 4-0.

Piedmont continued to hit the ball hard but could not find any open space and the contest closed without a run from the Lions.

TURNING POINT:
-- Piedmont remained hitless until the seventh inning with one out in Game 1.
-- A big fourth inning for the Falcons gave them the room needed to secure the victory.

UP NEXT:
--Piedmont is set for Monday action against Bridgewater at 1 and 3 p.m. at the Walker Athletic Complex.
