Career-Highs Highlight Home Volleyball Tri-Match

DEMOREST, Ga. - In the final home tri-match of the season, the Piedmont volleyball team was unable to pick up a win, but saw several career-highs in kills. Both Mary Brit Tallevast and Jessica Sconyers hit career-high marks in kills against Belhaven while Katie Hubbard's came against Maryville.

Match one: Belhaven 3, Piedmont 2

In an incredibly tightly-contested match, the Belhaven Blazers were able to earn the victory 3-2 in the opening match of the day. Piedmont posted 51 kills to Belhaven's 48 but it was the Blazers who were able to close it out in the fifth set. 

Piedmont held a 14-10 lead in the opening set but Belhaven used a 9-2 run to pull ahead 19-16 and take the first set 25-22. The Lions would even the score in the next set claiming it 25-19, but in a back and forth battle, the Blazers charged back in the third. 

Belhaven held an early lead but Piedmont tied the set at 17 and eventually pulled ahead 22-21. Despite that, the Blazers were able to hold on for the win 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead. 

Piedmont fell behind quickly in the fourth, 11-5, but did not consider themselves out of the hunt pulling back to tie the set at 16. It took extra points but the Lions were able to force a fifth set.

The Lions took the first three points of the set, but momentum switched in favor of the Blazers and Belhaven took the set 15-8 to seal the win. 

Mary Brit Tallevast posted a career-high 19 kills in the match while Jessica Sconyers hit a career-best 12 kills. 

Match two: Maryville 3, Piedmont 0

The Lions kept it close against the Scots but Maryville was able to pull off a 3-0 victory. Piedmont dropped sets 25-18, 25-20 and 25-18. 

Piedmont trailed 14-12 in the opening set but the Scots reeled off an 8-2 run that put them ahead 22-14 on their way to the 25-18 win. Piedmont held steady in the second set with it tied at 16, but Maryville pulled ahead late to claim the second set win 25-20. 

In the final set, the Lions held a 12-10 lead, but were unable to keep pace with Maryville down the stretch. 

Katie Hubbard led Piedmont with a career-high 16 kills while Vanessa Manzo added 28 assists and 11 digs. 

Up next, Piedmont will host Wesleyan on Wednesday at 6 p.m. inside Cave Arena for senior night. 

TURNING POINT:
--The Lions were able to hang tough against the Blazers but in the fifth set, Belhaven pulled away for a 15-8 win. 
--Maryville was able to outlast Piedmont down the stretch for the straight sets victory. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Mary Brit Tallevast had a career-high 19 kills against Belhaven.
--Piedmont had three student-athletes total double-digit kills against the Blazers as Katie Hubbard and Jessica Sconyers totaled 12 kills each with that being a career-high for Sconyers. 
--Hubbard then recorded a career-high 16 kills against Maryville in the second match of the day.
