DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont men's tennis concluded its fall slate over the weekend, hosting the Piedmont Fall Foliage Classic on Friday and Saturday on campus.
The Lions hosted both Pfeiffer and Berry and played a hidden dual format both days.
Piedmont was especially strong on Saturday, winning all eight of its doubles matches on the day.
Individually, the newcomers delivered a fantastic weekend, with freshmen picking up six singles victories combined.
Friday morning saw the Lions race out to a quick start, winning 5-of-6 singles matches against Pfeiffer, with all five victories coming in straight sets.
Then, in matchups against Berry,
Yannick Wassmer Navarro and
Mark Backeberg teamed up with a 6-4 win in doubles before they each also picked up a singles win over an opponent from the Vikings.
In the team's final session of the day, the Lions picked up three more singles victories, with
JC Foster along with newcomers
Leyton Dunn and
Caleb McElveen winning in dominant fashion.
Saturday morning saw the Lions deliver one fantastic doubles performance after another. Freshmen
Horacio Rodriguez and
Artiom Anzhilov blanked a team from Pfeiffer while Dunn and Backeberg teamed up and captured a late break to win 6-4 over Berry. Finally,
Simon Johnstone and
Charles Parnell outlasted their opponents from Berry to win in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3).
The second doubles session saw another Piedmont sweep, this time over Pfeiffer and in more dominant fashion, as the Lions combined to drop just three total games.
On courts 4 and 5 against Berry, the left-handed duo of Dunn and
Bryce VanOrder outlasted Deuce Daniel and Noah Koch of Berry, 6-4, while Johnstone and Foster closed out doubles with a 7-5 comeback win over Berry as well.
Singes play concluded the event, highlighted by another win from McElveen to improve his singles mark to 3-0 for the weekend, while Wassmer Navarro cruised in straight sets and
Rohan Kavali also picked up his first singles win of the weekend.
With the fall season in the books, the Lions will look toward the spring, as they are set to begin Saturday, February 8 with a doubleheader against Greenville and Transylvania.
