ROME, Ga. - Piedmont men's tennis battled the elements in a rain-shortened weekend at the ITA Regionals in Rome this past weekend.
Over Saturday and Sunday, the Lions were able to complete just five singles matches and 17 doubles matches with numerous Lions not seeing the court in singles action.
Singles play was highlighted by a first round main draw victory by
Yannick Wassmer Navarro against Berry's Noah Koch. Wassmer Navarro battled back after dropping the first set for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Vikings top singles player.
Overall, the Lions were able to pick up seven total doubles victories with five different pairings earning wins.
After dropping their first match in the main doubles draw, the team of Wassmer Navarro and
Mark Backeberg made a run to the consolation draw final after an 8-5 win over Leo Nedkov and Noah Koch from Berry and an 8-2 win against Paul Fridman and Conner Lloyd of Rhodes.
Freshmen
Amir Latipov and
Leyton Dunn rolled to an 8-1 win over Centre's Anderson Gosnell and Luke English while fellow freshmen
Artiom Anzhilov and
Horacio Rodriguez picked up a pair of wins, including an 8-4 triumph over Covenant's Jacob Eldridge and Gavin Patton and then an 8-2 win against a duo from Millsaps.
Finally,
Connor Phelps and
Simon Johnstone picked up a win (8-4) while
JC Foster and freshman
Caleb McElveen outlasted Maryville's duo 9-7.
Up next, the Lions will conclude their fall season by hosting the Piedmont Fall Foliage Classic in Demorest on Friday and Saturday, October 11-12.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Wassmer Navarro's win evened the score in the fall against Koch from Berry, who won 6-2, 6-3 in the dual match the teams played September 13.
