BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Piedmont University track & field program opened their 2024 Indoor season at the Emory Crossplex Showdown on Sunday. With a mix of returning veterans and young talent, the meet offered the first look at what the season could hold for the Lions.
Senior
Gary Halverson turned in one of the top performances of the day, setting a PR time of 4:20.94 in the men's mile. His time earned him second place overall as he was just .23 seconds behind first. JuniorÂ
Tucker Cox also had a PR performance during the meet, with his coming during the men's 5000m (15:59.27).Â
Freshman
Allison Cantrell got off to a great start as a Lion, running a 45.90 in the women's 300m dash. Her time earned her a ninth place overall finish as she placed just .07 seconds outside of grabbing points for the team.
In the men's 300m dash, Senior
Chris Donsereaux and junior Garrett Stalder went back-to-back for ninth and tenth place as both men ran the same exact time of 36.89.
Junior
Ileyna Brooks grabbed a top 10 finish in the women's 400m as she placed tenth with a time of 1:09.05.
Sophomore
Silas Goolsby started the season hot, securing points and an eight place finish in the men's 600m with a time of 1:27.47.
In the women's shot put, freshman
Kayla Ward had an impressive start to her career as a Lion, tossing 10.60m, good enough for a 4th place overall finish in the event.
On the men's field events side, newcomer
Colin Hackshaw and returner
Wes Rogers went back-to-back in the men's pole vault, earning fifth and sixth place. Hackshaw recorded a best height of 3.55m while Rogers recorded a 3.40m.
Next time out, the Lions return to Birmingham to compete in the KMS Invite on Sunday, January 21.
