Lions Win Again in CCS Tournament with 4-2 Victory Over Belhaven

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 4, Belhaven 2
Records: Piedmont, 23-16; Belhaven 21-17

LaGRANGE, Ga. - The Piedmont University baseball team is moving on as the only undefeated team in the CCS tournament after a 4-2 win over Belhaven Saturday. The Lions await their next opponent pending results of the final two games played Saturday.

In both the first and second innings, ADAM METIVIER walked the first batter but the Lions were able to escape without any damage. Piedmont did not get a runner aboard until the third inning when CARSON STROVINSKAS was walked to start the frame.

With two outs and runners at second and third, an error proved costly for the Blazers as KOLTON HICKS reached and NATHAN MIX and MAC BARTON both scored unearned.

Piedmont held a 2-0 lead until the fifth inning when Belhaven scored two runs on four hits. A lead-off home run set the tone and three singles drove in the tying run.

The tie was broken quickly as Piedmont scored in the bottom of the fifth manufacturing a sac fly without a hit or error in the inning. Metivier worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning and the Lions got back to work in the home half.

CARTER BALLSTADT was hit by a pitch, KYLE CARLSON singled to put runners on the corners and TYLER NELSON drove in another run on a sac fly making it 4-2.

NATHAN BOYCE entered in the seventh and despite a fielding error, he faced just three batters after a double play. It was a 1-2-3 inning in the eighth and again in the ninth as Boyce got a called strike three to end the game.

Boyce has not allowed a hit in his last 5.2 innings of work, all coming in the CCS tournament. Boyce earned his fifth save of the season while Metivier moved to 5-1 this year.

Up next, Piedmont will await the rest of tournament action Saturday to find out their next opponent.
