JACKSON, Miss. – The Piedmont University women's track and field team earned the first ever CCS Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Belhaven University Friday. The Lady Lions won in decisive fashion with 266 points to Berea's 225.
In total, Piedmont had seven conference champion individuals with JAYCIE PONCE winning three events and MICHELLE CATES claiming a pair of individual titles. The Lady Lions had six track championships by individuals and four field event overall champions.
Ponce was victorious in the women's 800m, women's 1500m and the women's 5000m. Ponce set a new school record in the 800m with a time of 2:20.85. Her 1500m came in at 4:49.53 while her 5000m time was a 19:23.44.
Cates' pair of victories came in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.42 and in the 400m hurdles clocking a 1:09.17. Also on the track, SKYLER SEEBER won the title in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 13:29.01.
Coming out of retirement, MADISON CASSIDY made her lone appearance of the season and made it count with the conference title in the women's pole vault with a mark of 2.90m.
In the women's javelin, CORTNEY BROWN won with a 34.53m throw, marking a personal best, while ALLIE FELTUS won the women's discus with a mark of 40.39m.
Piedmont posted a total of 23 podium finishes including taking all top-three spots in the women's javelin.
