MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Piedmont University baseball team was unable to complete a ninth inning rally Sunday dropping an 8-6 game at Huntingdon. The contest marked the final road regular season game of the season with just one CCS series remaining before the postseason.
The Hawks were first on the board with a run in the second, but Piedmont answered to tie the contest in the fourth. A hit, an error and a sac bunt brought around the tying run, but the lead was short-lived as Huntingdon tacked on two in the home half to lead 3-1.
Piedmont again attempted to chip away with a run in the fifth to make it 3-2, but the Hawks continued to add on with two runs on four hits in the fifth to lead 5-2. A leadoff home run set the tone in the inning but
TYLER ROON entered to limit the damage with two stranded to end the frame.
Back-to-back hit by pitches followed by back-to-back singles proved to be a solid start in the sixth as Piedmont cut into the lead 5-4, but the Hawks contiunued to keep the game just out of reach.
A three-run bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference as Piedmont could not overcome the deficit despite a rally in the top of the ninth scoring two runs on three hits.
