ORLANDO, Fla. - The Piedmont women's tennis team concluded its Orlando Spring Break Trip on Thursday by splitting a pair of matches.

The Lady Lions bested the College of Saint Benedict 7-2 in the afternoon before suffering their first loss of the season, a 6-3 defeat at hands of Wheaton.

Match 1: Piedmont 7, Saint Benedict 2

The Lions continued their winning ways to begin Thursday, rolling past the Bennies to move their record to 8-0.

Piedmont swept all three doubles lines and took four of the six singles matches to cruise to the victory. The duo of IMANI VINCENT and BRI LAIDMAN started things off with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles before DAKOTA WILKES and ABBEY GRACE VENHAM quickly made it 2-0 with an 8-4 win at No. 2. The Bennies put up a fight at No. 3 doubles, but ALYSSA MCSPADDEN and SARAH ROW toughed out a tiebreaker to complete the doubles sweep for Piedmont.

Needing just two matches to clinch the match, the Lady Lions were perfect at No. 3 and No. 2 singles as both MARION SLOYAN and Vincent delivered 6-0, 6-0 routs with Vincent earning the clinch at 5-0.

Playinig out the remaining four matches, the Lions picked up wins from freshman JORDAN BALLARD (6-4, 6-2) at No. 6 and Venham (6-3, 6-4) at No. 1. Ballard's victory moved the rookie to a perfect 5-0 in dual singles matches this season.

Match 2: Wheaton 6, Piedmont 3

In their fifth and final match of the trip, the Lady Lions suffered their first defeat of the season.

The match started off positively for the Lions, as they took 2-of-3 doubles matches to race out to an early advantage. Laidman and Vincent (8-4) won again at No. 1 while McSpadden moved up to No. 2 and partnered with Venham to eke out an 8-6 win at that spot.

Wheaton did pick up a win at No. 3 doubles to give it a point on the board heading to singles action. The Thunder were able to turn the match around with a convincing performance in singles.

Piedmont was able to win just one of the five singles lines, with McSpadden's 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5 the lone point on the board as Wheaton took the match 6-3.

Up net, the Lions will finally make their home debut, hosting Oglethorpe next Friday, March 17 at 3 p.m.
