DEMOREST, Ga. - In its long-awaited home opener, the Piedmont women's tennis team delivered a 9-0 shutout against Maryville on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in Demorest.
In typical Piedmont fashion, the Lady Lions dominated in both doubles and singles play and clinically defeated the Scots.
In the process, Piedmont senior
IMANI VINCENT earned her 52nd career singles win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles, breaking the all-time program record for singles victories.
Â
Â
The Lady Lions began the match already ahead, taking wins by default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to the Scots having only five available players. However, it did not matter once the first serve was hit, as Piedmont established control early and never let up.
ALYSSA MCSPADDEN and
DAKOTA WILKES dispatched their opponents, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles before the No. 1 duo of Vincent and
BRI LAIDMAN rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
Â
Courtesy of the default win at No. 6 singles, Piedmont needed just one singles victory to clinch the win. That win came in short order from Venham, who did not drop a single game at No. 1 singles.
Â
Overall, not a single Lady Lion lost more than two total games over five singles matches as
MARION SLOYAN (6-2, 6-0 at 3), McSpadden (6-0, 6-1 at 4) and freshman
JORDAN BALLARD (6-0, 6-1) dominated on the way to the shutout.
Piedmont opens the CCS the same way it ended its USA South run, with another victory.Â
Up next, the Lions will remain at home and celebrate Senior Day, scheduled for this Saturday, March 25 at 11 a.m. against Berea.
