DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University softball team swept the home doubleheader against St. Olaf in two close games.
KARA TAYLOR walked off game number one in extras while a late rally put game two to rest. Head Coach Terry Martin earned his 600th win in his career and at Piedmont with the Game 2 win.
Game 1 - Piedmont 3, St. Olaf 2 (F/8)
Despite threatening earlier in the contest in the first and second innings, the visiting Oles of St. Olaf were unable to break through and score first. In fact, Piedmont struck first in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
Following a leadoff walk from
HANNAH SMITH,
JASMINE LOWERY dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance Smith to second.
KAITLIN ISLEY was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, putting two on with one out.
KARA TAYLOR then singled to center, scoring Smith. Isley would get caught in a run down and tagged out at the plate in the same play.
St. Olaf was finally able to break through in the top of the 5th. Following an error and a SAC bunt, a single off starting pitcher
EMMA MCBRAYER scored the first run of the contest for the Oles. The Lady Lions were quick to answer back, tying the contest in the bottom of the 5th. A
KAITLIN ISLEY double, followed by an error allowed Piedmont to take the lead back. However, it was short lived as the Oles struck again in the 6th, tying the game at 2-2.
Neither team scored before the end of the scheduled seven innings and the contest went to extras. In the home half of the 8th, Piedmont's
KARA TAYLOR played hero, launching a ball off the center field wall as
KAITLIN ISLEY scored to win the contest.
Game 2 - Piedmont 7, St. Olaf 3
Piedmont struck early in Game 2, tacking on three runs in the first two frames. In the bottom of the 1st,
KARA TAYLOR kept the inning alive with a two out single. A
HANNAH MORGAN walk put two on for
MADISON HENRY who took full advantage, driving home the first run.
In the second frame, it was
JASMINE LOWERY working to keep the inning alive with a two out single. She went on to steal second and a
KAITLIN ISLEY walk set the same scenario up again for the Lady Lions. This time,
KARA TAYLOR smashed a double into center, clearing the bases and making the contest 3-0.
The Oles quickly reeled the contest back in, plating two runs of their own next time at the dish and Piedmont once again prepared for a hard fought contest.
St. Olaf worked their way back into the contest, manufacturing a run and chasing starter
CARLY FORRESTER from the game.
With a 3-3 contest, Piedmont once again took a narrow lead in the bottom of the 5th. Following back to back singles from Piedmont, pinch runner
HANNAH CALLAWAY stole third and advanced home as the ball deflected away on the throw. Pinch runner
JENNA BROACH attempted to go first to third on the play but was caught at third.
The Lady Lions carried the 4-3 lead into their last frame of at-bats and added a trio of insurance runs to seal the contest. Isley and Taylor both had huge hits in the innings as Piedmont went on to close the contest 7-3.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

KARA TAYLOR walked off Game 1 in the bottom of the 8th inning while going 2-4 with 2 RBIs in the game.

EMMA MCBRAYER went 8 innings in the circle giving up just 1 Earned Run in Game 1.

KARA TAYLOR went 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs in Game 2.

JASMINE LOWERY went 2-4 in Game 2.

RILEY FORD gave up just 1 hit and no runs after entered in the top of the 4th with one out in Game 2.
