Records: Piedmont, 9-3; Guilford, 5-4

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Piedmont men's tennis team took to the road and bested Guilford by a 7-2 margin on Sunday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina

With the match being delayed three hours due to rain, the Lions took to the courts and delivered an outstanding all around performance, taking 2-of-3 doubles matches and winning 5-of-6 singles matches to secure the nonconference road win.

The win gives the Lions a season-long five match winning streak.

The match started on the side of the Quakers, who were able to grab the first point of the match with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, handing the duo of RYAN RAUGH and CONNOR PHELPS just their second loss of the season.

However, from there, Piedmont fought back. ALBERTO NUNEZ and JACKSON TRAYLOR delivered an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles to even the score at 1-1. Then, the momentum of the match shifted. Piedmont's No. 2 doubles team of SILAS SANDLES and SIMON JOHNSTONE were trailing 6-3 at No. 2 doubles before the duo mounted a furious comeback, winning five straight games to take the match 8-6 and give the Lions a 2-1 lead they never relinquished.

The Lions carried the momentum straight into singles action, with Raugh rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6 to make it 3-1 Piedmont. Overall, the Lions won the first set in four of the six matches to establish control.

After battling through a tough first set, Nunez was next to clinch, with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 to move the Lions to within a point of winning the match.

Guilford was able to salvage a singles point with a win at No. 3. However, momentum was short-lived, as Sandles clinched the match for the Lions with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) triumph at No. 5, outlasting his opponent in a second set breaker to push the Lions over the top.

With the match in hand, freshmen Phelps and YANNICK WASSMER NAVARRO both took hard-fought matches with Phelps taking a second-set breaker to make it 6-2 Lions before Wassmer Navarro concluded the festivities, coming back from losing a first set tiebreaker to win the second set and then take a third-set match tiebreaker to make it a 7-2 final in favor of Piedmont.

Up next, the Lions will play their third match in three days, returning home to take on Truett McConnell Monday, March 27 at 2 p.m.
