SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Piedmont University softball team swept the final series on its Texas road trip on the heels of dominant pitching performances in both games. The Lady Lions wrap up the road trip winning four of the six contests.
Game 1 – Piedmont 6, Trinity 3
Piedmont got the scoring started early in the contest, finding the first run of the game in the top of the first. With one out,
KAITLIN ISLEY walked on four pitches, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
KARA TAYLOR took full advantage of Isley's work on the base path, doubling her home to move the scoreline to 1-0.
Trinity responded in the bottom half of the inning by manufacturing a run of their own. Following a lead off HBP (hit by pitch) on the first pitch of the game from
EMMA MCBRAYER, a walk and multiple sacrifice bunts scored the first run of the game for Tigers without them recording a hit in the inning.
Determined to get the run back, McBrayer led off the top of the second with a double to right.
LYNDZI PARTLOW dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance McBrayer to third and a two out single from
MACIE ALLEN pushed Piedmont back in front 2-1.
Both pitchers settled into a rhythm until the bottom of the fourth where Trinity once again tied the contest 2-2.
In need of runs again, the Piedmont offense answered the call in the top of the fifth. A trio of singles from Allen, Isley and Taylor resulted in two runs crossing. The damage did not stop there as a two out double from
HANNAH MORGAN pushed across another run, giving the Lady Lions a 5-2 lead.
Taking a 6-2 lead into bottom of the seventh after adding an insurance run in the top half, the Tigers attempted a late rally against McBrayer. Back to back singles to lead off the inning started trouble, and a one out RBI single up the middle made things interesting. Another single followed directly after but the Piedmont defense was ready. Center fielder
HEARTLY NEPVEUX gunned down the advancing Tiger at the plate, stopping the run from scoring. McBrayer got the next batter to ground out, stopping the rally and finishing the contest with a 6-3 win.
Game 2 – Piedmont 2, Trinity 1
In a true pitchers duel, neither Piedmont nor Trinity scored any runs early in the contest.
CARLY FORRESTER gave up just three hits before Piedmont was able to give her the lead.
It wasn't until the top of the fifth when Piedmont gave Forrester run support.
LYNDZI PARTLOW led off the inning with a single to center and a sacrifice bunt moved Partlow to second.
HEARTLY NEPVEUX singled to right putting runners on the corners with one down. Needing a run,
MACIE ALLEN dropped an RBI SAC bunt, scoring Partlow for the first run of the game.
Piedmont added a second run in the top of the sixth, with
KARA TAYLOR leading off the inning with a single. Following a fielder's choice with everyone safe, pinch hitter
RYLIE ERICKSON singled to center with runners on first and second. The pinch runner Hannah Calloway scored from second on the play. The Lady Lions were unable to score any more in the inning but took a 2-0 lead.
Once again, the Tigers rallied late against the Lady Lions. A pair of singles and a walk in the inning put the tying run on second and ended Forrester's day with two gone in the inning. Turning the ball over to
EMMA MCBRAYER, a passed ball allowed a run to cross, pulling Trinity within one and putting the tying run on third. Piedmont elected to intentionally walk a batter, loading the bases before McBrayer got her team out of the jam with a ground ball final out.
