Piedmont Baseball Opens 2023 Season with 8-4 Win Over #20 California Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - In the 2023 season opener, the Piedmont University baseball team defeated #20 California Lutheran 8-4 after a hot start. BODIE EILERTSON anchored the Lions on the mound earning the win as he pitched the first 5.0 innings. 

Piedmont was able to jump out to an early lead putting a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs in the top of the first. The Lions were able to drive in three runs on three hits and an error in the frame. 

COLE ELLIS walked while TRACE CATE recorded his first hit as a Lion, doubling to left. CARTER BALLSTADT drove in the first run of the game with an RBI ground out and KYLE CARLSON followed with an RBI single making it 2-0. 

The final run of the inning came after an error giving the Lions a 3-0 cushion heading into the bottom of the first. BODIE EILERTSON worked a 1-2-3 inning in the first and allowed just two hits through the first three innings. 

The Kingsmen got on the board in the third after a single, an error and an RBI groundout making it 3-1. Piedmont used an error and a passed ball in the fourth to tack on another run.

Eilertson continued to deal until the fifth inning when California Lutheran managed to string together three hits for two runs. Eilertson was replaced after five allowing just two earned runs, two walks and recording four strikeouts. 

Piedmont used an impressive three hit, three run seventh to extend the lead with KOLTON HICKS hitting a 2-RBI single and later scoring on an error for a 7-3 lead. Both teams added a run in the ninth and Piedmont's BRADEN SIMMS earned the save pitching the final four innings allowing just one earned run. 

Up next, game two of the series will be Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET.

TURNING POINT:
--Piedmont used a pair of explosive innings to take down the Kingsmen scoring three runs in the first and seventh innings. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--KYLE CARLSON was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while adding an RBI
--BODIE EILERTSON earned his first win of the 2023 season with it marking his second victory as a Lion.
