Lady Lions Fall at Home to Berea

NEED TO KNOW:

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's basketball team saw its offense go cold in the second half in a 64-48 loss to Berea on Saturday afternoon at Cave Arena.

The Lady Lions led by a point at the break, but it was all Mountaineers in the second half, holding Piedmont to just 21 points in the final 20 minutes.

NAKIYAH WASHINGTON was the bright spot for Piedmont, as the senior from Adairsville, Georgia became the program's all-time leading scorer on Saturday. Washington scored all 15 of her points in the first half, making 7-of-9 free throws.

The first half was a defensive battle with neither side able to stretch the lead. Berea led 26-21 in the final minutes of the half before a 6-0 Piedmont run made it a 27-26 edge for the Lions heading to the break.

The Mountaineers started strong out of the locker room, with a 10-2 run to grab a seven-point advantage midway through the third quarter.

Piedmont was unable to recover from there, as Berea gradually extended its lead throughout the second half.

The Mountaineers were strong driving to the basket, earning 31 free throw attempts and converting on 20.

Up next, Piedmont's homestand will continue with a matchup against Wesleyan this Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- The Mountaineers blitzed the Lions in the third quarter, outscoring them 17-7 to grab a 43-34 lead heading to the fourth.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Washington now stands alone as Piedmont's all-time leading scorer, eclipsing Amari Price's prevoius record of 1,240 on Saturday.

ALUMNI DAY:
- Amari Price was one of many former Lady Lions in attendance as both the men's and women's basketball programs at Piedmont celebrated Alumni Day inside Cave Arena. Price was presented with a commemorative game ball by Head Coach Jamie Purdy and former assistant Brad Cochran during halftime of the men's contest.
