Piedmont Falls in Road CCS Contest as Covenant Pulls Away Late

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 2, Covenant 5
Records: Piedmont, 5-7-3 (2-2 CCS); Covenant, 7-5-3 (3-2 CCS)

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University men's soccer team fell late at Lookout Mountain as Covenant pulled away behind three goals in the last 20 minutes of play.

It was Piedmont that struck first in the contest as Colin Vogel and Davis Knight linked up with Vogel finishing the opportunity in the 24th minute. The lead was short lived as the Scots responded just three minutes later with a goal of their own.

The Lions did their best to hang on in the half and claw to the break with a neutral score line, but in the 39th minute, the Scots once again found the back of the net. Piedmont was out shot 13-5 in the first and trailed 2-1 after the first 45.

Things remained close for the majority of the second half until Covenant began to pull away again. A red card to the Lions and a goal in the 74th made it 3-1 but an immediate response from Philip Nowak pulled the game back within one. Assisted by Vogel, the goal gave hope once again for a late equalizer.

Dashing Piedmont's chances, the Scots added two more goals in the 76th and 80th to put a stamp on their win, closing the game 5-2.

Up next, Piedmont returns home for one final regular season contest against a strong Belhaven squad. Kickoff is set for Saturday, October 21 in Demorest.
